More detail on this person: Alex Jekel, 83 Alex S. Jekel Olympian, The (WA) - Friday, April 28, 2006 Olympia WA United States Alex Jekel, age 83, died on Thursday, April 25, 2006, after an extended illness. To his family and friends, Alex will be remembered for his wisdom, personal courage, outstanding humor, and spiritual strength. The loss of his kindness, insight, and the daily presence of his loving nature will be keenly felt by his wife of 63 years, Margaret, his nine children, his 22 grandchildren, and his eight great-grandchildren. Although Alex's life is too rich with experience to address in so short a writing, many will remember him as a patriot of his distinguished military career. His sacrifice to his country included hazardous combat as a bomber pilot in World War II and a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Alex's dedication, bravery, and commitment to his fellow soldiers were documented as one of the characters in the bestselling novel, "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young". The experience of combat left Alex with the strong belief that war should be remembered for its destruction and not glorified. He wished to be remembered as a man who valued human life and encouraged the pursuit of peace. After retiring from the military, Alex continued his service to the community as a scholar and teacher whose passion for education, enthusiasm for personal excellence, and love of children inspired countless students. Certified in grades K through 12, Alex taught in both the public and private sectors. His years of teaching included students at the high school and grade school levels. In later years, he occasionally worked as a substitute teacher, enjoying the motivational work. In memory of Alex Jekel, a Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lacey on Monday, May 1, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. A Rosary will start at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass.
