More detail on this person: Deacon James H.B. Jones, Jr. entered into eternal rest on Thursday,
August 21, 2014 in Hampton, Virginia at the age of 68. He was born on January 4, 1946 in Newport
News, Virginia to the union of the late James H.B. Jones, Sr. and Lillian (Blizzard) Jones. He was
educated in the Hampton City Public School System and graduated from George P. Phoenix High
School in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Specialist, but later
attended flight school and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, Two. He served as a
helicopter pilot in Vietnam where he was awarded the Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star (from the
government of the Republic of Vietnam), the Bronze Star Medal for participation in ground combat
operations, and the Air Medal with V (Valor) device and 13 Oak Leaf Clusters for acts of heroism in
combat during aerial flight. He retired as a longshoreman after working for 15 years in Local 846.
Deacon Jones attended Mount Calvary Baptist Church, in Newport News, Virginia where he served as a
Sunday school teacher, trustee, treasurer, chairman of the financial committee, and member of the
Deacon board. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of over 30 years- Linda Jones of Hampton,
Virginia; four children- James H. Jones III (Sophia) of Huntsville Alabama, Danielle Y. Jones of
Fredericksburg, Virginia, CW2 Matthew F. Jones of Newport News, Virginia, and Andrew G. Jones of
Hampton, Virginia; two brothers- Goffery Taliaferro and Russell C. Jones (Marie) of Hampton,
Virginia; one sister- Ann Mason (Otis) of Chesapeake, Virginia; six grandchildren, one
great-grandchild, and of host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A viewing will be held
from7-8 PM at the Carter Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 251 Richneck RD. Newport News, VA 23608.
Final services will be held at 11:00 A.M on August 29, 2014 at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 1129
