More detail on this person: JORDAN, Homer Richard "Dick", 81, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018 at his home in Genesee Township in Michigan, after a lengthy struggle with stomach cancer. There will be no funeral service, in accordance with his wishes. Born in Lincoln Park, Michigan, October 8, 1936 to Homer Simon Jordan and Berniece Knew Jordan, and one of nine children, Homer was raised in Flint, and enlisted in the Army in 1954. He married Norma Virginia "Ginger" Underwood on February 20, 1960, at Central Baptist Church in Flint. Homer was promoted 2nd Lieutenant after completing Officer Candidate School in 1963, and served two tours of duty in Vietnam in 1965 and 1967. He earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, 11 Air Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm during service as a helicopter pilot, piloting UH-1A Hueys and AH-1G Cobras. A newspaper story of the time noted that he had more Distinguished Flying Crosses than any other pilot of any service present for duty in the Southeast Asia theatre of war. Homer retired as a Major in 1975 after further service as a pilot, infantry officer, and staff officer, including the award of the Meritorious Service Medal. After his military service, Homer obtained a builder's license in Michigan, and built numerous homes in the area, as well as building homes for himself and Ginger in Richfield Township, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Genesee Township. He worked as a respiratory therapist, and started several businesses. He earned an Associate Degree in Business Management from Northwood College, and an Associate Degree in Applied Science as a Respiratory Therapy Technician from Delta College. Homer enjoyed traveling, and owned trailers and a motor home, in which he and Ginger spent extensive time in Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, and Arizona. He also owned and refurbished a sixteen-foot wooden boat, the "Sloth", in which he and his family boated in the Chagres River and Gatun Lake in the Panama Canal Zone. On his return from one trip in 1971, Homer was called on to embark some soldiers and to journey up the Chagres to rescue some servicemen who had become lost in an exercise in the rain forest. He returned successfully hours later with the rescued men and the boat holed from an underwater obstruction. Homer is survived by his wife, Norma Virginia Underwood Jordan; four brothers, Charles, Leonard, Robert, and Anthony; two sisters, Penelope and Katherine; two children, Roger Dennis (Cathy) Jordan of Davison and Lisa Jo Jordan (Jim) Hunt of Southgate; two grandchildren, James E. Hunt, Jr. and Jordan E. Hunt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother David, and sister Ann.
