More detail on this person: FRANKLIN VINCENT JONES NEWPORT NEWS - Franklin Vincent "Vince" Jones, 54, of Quillen Terrace, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Riverside Hospital, Newport News, after a brief illness. Born in Suffolk, Vince was a veteran of the Vietnam War, a long time resident of Newport News, and of the Baptist faith. In his younger years, he excelled in Boy Scouts, where he was a member of the Scouts Order of the Arrow, enjoyed boating and swimming, attended Warwick High School and graduated with honors from Frederick Military Academy, where he participated in the drum and bugle corps. As a musician, Vince played the clarinet, saxophone, cornet, and piano, which pleased many listeners. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and then joined the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of captain and served in Vietnam as a Cobra helicopter pilot with the 1st Cavalry Division. After the Army, Vince began a career in the shipping industry that took him to many locations throughout the world where he enjoyed the intricacies of international business. During this time, he held the position of director of international operations for Martin Processing in Martinsville. Vince also enjoyed snow skiing, volunteering as a "Big Brother" in Martinsville, and held a student pilot certificate. Vince's greatest joy was as an accomplished genealogical researcher, where he traced many lines of the family history including those who served in the Civil War, the War of 1812, the Revolutionary War, and ancestors from England. He was a member of the Military Order of Stars and Bars, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, the Museum of the Confederacy, the Isle of Wight Historical Society, and the Surry County Historical Society. During these years of research, Vince made many friends in his field and throughout the country. Vince was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Jones. He is survived by his mother, Susie P. "Sue" Crocker Jones-Kalista, and step-father, Joseph M. "Joe" Kalista of Newport News; two brothers, Robert L. "Bob" Jones of Newport News and James E. "Jamie" Jones of Norfolk; two nephews, James E. Jones II and Michael C. Jones, both of Norfolk; and four step-brothers, Joseph Kalista III, of Chesapeake, Tom Kalista of Hampton, N.H., Frank Kalista of Baltimore, Md., and Steve Kalista of Shrewbury, Pa. Vin has moved on now, a bit too soon, but it will be OK. He will be sorely missed by those who knew his kind heart and true sense of compassion, his family. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at the Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Isle of Wight County with the Rev. John McQuarry officiating. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
