More detail on this person: Col. (US Army Ret) Kenneth E. Kellogg, 84, of Belleville, Illinois, died Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Sycamore Village Assisted Living in Swansea, Illinois. Kenneth was born on the family farm in rural Hardin County, Ohio to Max and Edith (Beach) Kellogg on December 11, 1932. He was raised on the farm along with his brother Rex who still lives on the farm. Ken graduated from Dunkirk High School and graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Agricultural Education in 1954 and was commissioned a Second Lt. in the US Army Reserves through the ROTC program. He taught high school Vocational Agriculture and Industrial Arts and was called to active duty in the US Army in May of 1955. He married Marjorie Midge Sprang shortly after college graduation and they raised 3 sons, Curtis (Connie) of Millstadt, IL, Randy (Kelly) of Swansea, IL, and Scott of Clearwater, FL and one daughter, Janette Shocklee of Pacific, MO. They have 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Shortly after entering active Army duty at Fort Sill, OK, Ken was offered the opportunity to go to the Army flight school, an offer he could not refuse. After training at San Marcos, TX and Fort Rucker, AL, Ken received his Army Aviator Wings in August of 1956. This led to a decision to make the Army a career (with his wife's concurrence) which resulted in 30 years of Army service. His assignments included OK, TX, AL, Korea, VA, MI, PA, Panama, Vietnam (2 tours), the Pentagon, Iran, and MO where he retired from the Troop Support Company in 1985 as the Deputy Commander. He earned an MBA at Michigan State University in 1963 under the Army's advanced degree program and attended numerous schools while in the Army to include the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. After Army retirement he worked for Beech Aircraft, then as a tax preparer where he was an Enrolled Agent authorized to practice before the IRS. During the non-tax season, he became an FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). He taught at the Scott AFB Aero Club until its closure in 2012. Since then he as worked as an independent CFI and as a simulator instructor at the Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC). His Army awards include the Master Army Aviator, Bronze Star (2), Airmedal with 19 clusters and the Legion of Merrit. He was awarded the FAAs Wright Brothers Master Pilot award in 2010 for 50 years of accident free flying. In 2013 he was named St. Louis Flight Instructor of the Year. Along with a group of like minded local aviators, an 82 acre cornfield was purchased in 1983 with residences and hangars built around a 2,500 foot grass strip. Ken and Midge built their retirement home at Aero Estates, where they could live with their plane with a hangar in their back yard. Ken is a long time member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Fairview Heights, Illinois where he was a Sunday School Teacher. Ken was a participating member in a number of aviation organizations to include a Charter member of the Army Aviation Assn. (AAAA), EAA, QB, and Military Officers Assn. (MOAA).
