More detail on this person: Col. George P. Kelly Col. George P. Kelly, beloved husband, father, friend, and veteran; passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 5, 2004. Col. Kelly was a Biloxi native, although he spent most of his military career at duty stations throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Col. Kelly joined the National Guard's 114th Field Artillery, Battery F, based in Biloxi, shortly before Pearl Harbor. Col. Kelly attended flight school in California and flew B-25 bombers in the South Pacific in WWII. After WWII, he was stationed in Germany, where he learned to fly helicopters. After two tours of duty in Germany, seven years later, George was stationed at Ft. Rucker, AL. training helicopter pilots. In 1990, he attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA. During his military career, Col. Kelly served tours of duty in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. In 1975, Col. Kelly was transferred to Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. While there he was assigned to the Diplomatic Corps of the Military Advisory Assistance Group. After a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Army, and after having obtained a B.A. and Master's Degree, Col. Kelly retired in 1979 in San Francisco. While there he worked for FEMA, and obtained his real estate license. Within a few years, he realized he belonged in Biloxi, where his family and friends were. George moved back to Biloxi in the 1980's. In the year 2000, after his wife Gloria passed away, George married Helen Scarborough. He loved life, his family, his friends, the military, and Biloxi. Col. Kelly was preceded in death by his 1st wife: Gloria Carolyn Kelly, son, Daniel Francis Kelly, parents, Herman & Henrietta Kelly, sister, Gertrude Venus, 2 brothers, Herman Elwood Kelly, and James Carl "J.C." Kelly. Col. Kelly is survived by his wife, Helen Kelly of Biloxi, his son, George P. Kelly, Jr. of Biloxi, daughter, Suzanne Kelly Watkins and husband Michael of Seattle, WA, 2 sisters Henrietta Williams of Biloxi, Ione Trascher of Ocean Springs. Visitation will be 5:30-8pm, 7pm rosary, Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home. A procession will leave the funeral home at 1:30pm for a graveside service at 2:00pm, Monday, February 9, 2004 at Biloxi National Cemetery.
