More detail on this person: Melvin Leonard "Mel" Koehn MELVIN LEONARD KOEHN, son of Albert J. and Edna (Eck) Koehn was born March 26, 1925 at Orienta, Oklahoma. He passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Claremore, Oklahoma at the age of 85 years. He was very young when his family moved to Taloga where he was raised and educated. He was united in marriage to Helen Mae Furnish, April 19, 1947 at Ashland, Kansas. They had one daughter, Ann Kathleen. Melvin spent twenty eight years in the United States Army serving in the European Theater in World War II, two tours in Vietnam, flying helicopters and fixed wing airplanes. He was highly decorated receiving a Silver Star, Purple Heart and numerous other medals. He earned 37 oak leaf clusters to accompany his Air Medal (Vietnam). He was honorably discharged June 30, 1972 and retired to Seiling, Oklahoma where he worked fourteen years at the Seiling Post Office. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, November 27, 1982. Melvin married Roberta Shuck Horner, March 19, 1983 and they made their home in Yukon until 2009. He was a member of the Town and Country Christian Church in Yukon and a member of the VFW, American Legion and a 15 year council member of RSVP. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home, playing dominoes with friends, fishing from his pontoon and being with family. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Roberta Koehn of Parsons, KS; a daughter: Kathy Morrison of Enid; a step daughter: Sheryl McCarty and husband Jim of Mound Valley, KS; four granddaughters: Gina Ward Lee, Jodi Ward and Jessica Walker of Enid; Kristina McCarty of Parsons, KS; two grandsons: James McCarty and wife Bethany of Parsons, KS and Justin McCarty and wife Michaela of Omaha, NE; eight great grandsons: Sterling and Trip Lee, Zachary, Russell and Brock McCarty, Cole McCarty, J. T. and Forest Walker; one brother: Robert Koehn and wife Lavada of Bella Vista, AR; brothers-in-law: Jim, Charles and Jerry Shuck; niece: Mavis Johnson; nephew: David Koehn; the Cotton Furnish family of Guymon and the Carl Rankin family of Tulsa. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Elm Grove Community Church with Pastor Orville White, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Brumfield Cemetery at Seiling. Memorials can be made for Alzheimer's research with the Redinger Funeral Home-PO Box 236-Seiling, OK 73663 serving as custodian of the funds.
