By JOE WARREN o Sangre de Christo Chronicle BLACK LAKE, N.M. - Bruce Kelly, 70, of Black Lake fell to his death Monday evening (June 28) at his home on County Road B-38 in Black Lake. Kelly was a former resident of Liberal and graduted from Liberal High School in 1958. According to Angel Fire (N.M.) Fire Chief Orlando Sandoval, Kelly was working on a construction project at his residence when he fell approximately 12 feet onto the concrete while installing trusses on the structure. Angel Fire Fire Department, Colfax County Fire Department, Angel Fire Police, Colfax County Sheriff Department, and the medical examiner responded to the call where Kelly was pronounced dead on the scene. According to Sandoval, when his crew arrived on the scene, Kelly was not breathing and unresponsive. Kelly's wife Beth made the emergency call for help at 8:52 p.m. after finding Bruce unconscious. The Rivera Family Mortuary in Taos is handling the arrangements. Bruce volunteered for numerous organizations in the area he loved so well including being a founding member of the Rotary Club of Angel Fire where he worked closely with youth and youth programs sponsored by the club. "He was a very genuine and kind person who helped everyone," Edd Geoffroy, a fellow Rotarian said. "Bruce was so unselfish with his time, his works and his words, he was a true humanitarian and he will be missed by many people. Rotary's motto is 'Service Above Self' and Bruce exemplified this more than anyone else." Kelly was very involved in keeping children off drugs and even headed up a Don't Mess with Meth program for area fifth-grade students, educating them and helping them pledge to stay off meth and other drugs. "Anytime you needed Bruce he was there for you," Geoffroy said. "He was a person you could count on. My heart goes out to Beth and his entire family during this time." A celebration of life service is scheduled at 11 a.m. today (July 6) at the United Church in Angel Fire. This week's July 4th Rotary Pancake Breakfast is dedicated to the memory of Bruce and a special donation fund will be set up for Bruce's wife and family at the event.
