More detail on this person: Dan Allen ,Ii Lohwasser Lohwasser, 53 OBITUARIES Greensboro News & Record (NC) - Friday, August 2, 2002 CHARLOTTE Dan Allen Lohwasser, II, lost his lengthy and courageous battle with cancer on July 31, 2002, at the age of 53. Anative of Richmond, Va., Dan resided in Charlotte for the past 17 years. Adecorated Vietnam Veteran, he valiantly served his country as a helicopter pilot. Dan subsequently began his career at the Raleigh News and Observer while attending the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill where he graduated in Dec. of 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism. Dan continued his illustrious career with the United Press International in 1975 as a general news and sports reporter in Raleigh, N.C. and was promoted to Charlotte Bureau Manager. He was named UPIs Carolinas sports editor and held that position until October, 1984, when he joined The Charlotte Observer. While with UPI, he was a regular on the annual Atlantic Coast Conference football writers tour and at the ACC basketball tournament. He also covered the court martial of Robert Garwood, the only American soldier tried for aiding and abetting the enemy during the Vietnam War, as well as several other stories that received national recognition. In January of 1986, Dan Joined Muhleman Marketing and was intensely involved with Jerry Richardson as he began his quest to obtain the NFL Carolina Panthers, and the ownership group to procure the first-ever NBA franchise in Charlotte. He also worked closely with Rick Hendrick, a client and personal friend, during his tenure at Muhleman. He joined forces with Hendrick Motorsports in July of 1998 as Marketing Director. His primary achievements included securing sponsorships for the four Winston Cup teams, two Busch Grand National teams and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams. Dan was awarded the Robert Gee Award of excellence in 2000. This prestigious honor is awarded annually to the Hendrick Motorsports team member best displaying outstanding job performance, leadership, teamwork and for contributions above and beyond expectations in order to help the organization succeed. Unselfish and generous, he exemplified a true humanitarian. These endearing qualities touched the lives of all who knew and loved him. It was his engaging personality that made him so popular; he greeted adversity with a smile and his quick wit often brought calm to a tense situation. As a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son and friend he is dearly loved and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Paula J. Lohwasser; son, Dan A. Lohwasser III, Heidi and Paal Klykken; mother, Jeanette Lohwasser; sisters, Susan Lohwasser and Beverly Hennessey; brother, Curtis Lohwasser and granddaughter, Madison Lohwasser. Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. on Monday, August 5, 2002, at the Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive. A memorial ceremony celebrating the life of Dan Allen Lohwasser will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow the service at the Forest Lawn Cemetery East. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Hospice at Charlotte, 420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, N.C. 28204 "directed toward a future Hospice Facility" in memory of Dan A. Lohwasser, II.
