More detail on this person: Vernon R Lawrence Mr. Vernon Ralph Lawrence, 86, of 1200 Mira Mar, Medford, Oregon, a native of Massena, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2009 at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center in Medford. Vernon was born January 27,1923 in Massena, the son of John Raymond and Mildred Dorothy Thomas Lawrence. He graduated from Massena High School in 1942. In December 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program, He was called to active duty in February 1943. After b-17 flight training, he was appointed as an aircraft commander. He and his troops arrived in England in November 1944, where he was assigned to the 447th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in Rattesden, England. By the age of 21, he had completed 30 combat missions on enemy industrial locations in Germany. While stationed at MacDill Field in Tampa Florida, he married Mary L. Best with Chaplain Walsh officiating. Upon return from the Army, he attended Clarkson College where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948. In August 1949, he was called to active duty again, where he served as an instructor at the Engineer's, in Fort Belvoir, VA. During his military career he served in England, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from active duty on July 1, 1968 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He then went to work in the claims department at Aetna Property and Casualty Insurance until his retirement. He was a member of the St. Lawrence Council #1141 Knights of Columbus in Massena and the Military Officers Association of America in Alexandria, Virginia. He was an avid croquet player until his health started to decline. His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family. He also enjoyed building and flying model airplanes for many years and was active with his computer. Vernon is survived by his wife, Mary; eight children, William R. Lawrence and his wife, Flora, San Jose, CA, Christopher R. Lawrence and his wife, Connie, Oak Ridge, NC, Teresa Capote, Pacifica, CA, Philip J. Lawrence and his wife, Yvonne, Cupertino, CA, Brigid Lawrence, McCall, ID, Liguori J. Lawrence, Sonoma, CA, Rita Voss and her husband, Steve, Mill Valley, CA and Anthony A. Lawrence and his wife, Theresa, Daly City, CA; 13 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; his brother, Burt Lawrence, Massena; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Janice Sutton; and three brothers, Vivian B., Raymond T., and Robert S. Lawrence. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Morristown, with Rev. Kevin D. McEwan, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Morristown.
