More detail on this person: COL (Ret.) Benjamin "Ben" Arnold Andrew Logerquist (October 31, 1932 - November 29, 2014) U.S. Veteran Benjamin "Ben" A. Logerquist, 82, of Jacksonport, passed away Saturday evening, November 29, 2014, at Golden Living Center-Dorchester in Sturgeon Bay. He was born October 31, 1932, in Sturgeon Bay, the son of the late Arnold and Lucietta (Wagner) Logerquist. Ben graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1950 before graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UW-Madison in 1954. He participated in ROTC and entered the U.S. Army after graduation. He received his Masters in Mechanical Engineering in 1963 from VPI & SU, and was studying for his Ph.D. there when called to teach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. Ben was an Army aviator, flying fixed wing aircrafts and helicopters. He served in Korea from 1963-1964 at Camp Casey with the Rank of Captain. He was promoted to the Rank of Major upon being assigned to West Point from 1966-1969 as an Instructor of Mechanical Engineering. Ben was promoted to Lt. Colonel while serving in Vietnam at Long Binh from Dec.1969-Dec.1970. Upon returning home, he attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA, before serving with the Inspector General's Office in Washington, DC, for two years and then four years at the Pentagon. He was promoted to full Colonel in the summer of 1977 and assigned as the Commander of Installation at Jefferson Proving Grounds, Madison, IN, for four years. Ben married the love of his life, Althea M. Hansen, of Sturgeon Bay, on August 22, 1953, at the Congregational Church in Sturgeon Bay. They had two daughters. Ben and Althea moved back to Door County in 1981 after Ben retired from service. He began and operated A&B Enterprise in 1984, a heavy equipment operator and machining business. Ben helped create the Jacksonport Fire Department in 1983, serving as its first Chief. He was also a charter member of the NE Wisconsin Antique Power Association. Ben was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Men's Club, the FFA Alumni, Jacksonport First Responders, Jacksonport Historical Society and Advancement Association, Northeast Wisconsin Antique Power Association, VFW Post #3088, and American Legion Post #72. He loved the outdoors, to work with his hands to hunt, fish, and work the land. Survivors include his wife, Althea; two daughters, Deborah (Paul) Schumacher of Clark Lake, Jacksonport, Cheryl Thomas of San Francisco, CA; two grandchildren, Shonda (Arthur) Moats of Pittsburg, PA, Chaz Thomas of San Francisco, CA; two great-grandchildren, Kaylor and Ava Moats; one sister, Jane (Jerry) Mead of Lewisburg, PA; and dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Lucietta Logerquist; sister, Marcene Clauson; and his dear nephew, Tom Clauson. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church 1230 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 with Rev. David Leistra officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Jacksonport. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, at HUEHNS Funeral Home, 1414 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay, and at the church, Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be given in Ben's memory for the United Methodist Men's Club (church address) or the Jacksonport Fire Department (3365 County Rd. V, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235).
