JR,COL USA RET died during his daily bike ride in
Arlington Texas on August 5, 2004. A military
brat, Ed enlisted in the Army right out of high
school in 1943, served in WWI, discharged in 1946,
attended the University of West Virginia until
receiving an appointment to West Point, graduating
in 1951. He attended flight school and flew
helicopters in Korea and served as Battlion
Commander of the 52nd CAB in 1967 - 1968. His
decorations included the Legion of Merit w/ 2 OLC,
Distinguished Flying Cross w/ 1 OLC, Air Medal
w/10 OLC, Bronze Star w/ 1 OLC, Army
Commendation Medal w/ 1 OLC, Good Conduct
Medal ( WWII ) plus numerous campaign medals,
stars and ribbons from WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
His most prized decoration was the Presidential
Unit Citation awarded the 52nd CAB for it's
actions during the battle of Dak TO in November of
1967. Ed was a Master Aviator, qualified in fixed
wing as well as helicopters. He also was awarded
the Parachute Badge and Ranger Tab. He taught at
the Army War College and was Program Manager
for the Blackhawk helicopter. Upon retirement in
1978, Ed held several influencial positions in the
civilian world, was active in various charitable
organizations and many bicycling organizations. He
is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol, five
children and six grandchildren and a sister.
