More detail on this person: Ray A Lammon Former Durango resident and retired Marine Lt. Col. Ray A. Lammon Jr. died after a protracted struggle with esophageal cancer Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at his home in Anchorage, Alaska. He was 65. Mr. Lammon was born to Ila Naomi King and Ray A. Lammon Sr. on July 17, 1948, in New York City. His family moved to the West when he was 2, eventually settling in Durango. Mr. Lammon spent the majority of his childhood in Durango, graduating from Durango High School in the mid-1960s. After attending Fort Lewis College in Durango on a gymnastics scholarship, he graduated in 1971 with a degree in psychology, although he also was an artist. He completed his graduate work in psychology and counseling from the University of Northern Colorado in 1979. In 1968, Mr. Lammon joined the Marine Corps and served honorably for 27 years. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1971 and was designated a naval aviator in 1973 after graduating from Navy Flight School in Pensacola, Fla. Later in his military career, Mr. Lammon graduated from Naval Justice School and served as a Marine Corps legal officer. During his career, Mr. Lammon participated in Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon, in 1975. In 1983, he coordinated and flew combat search and rescue in Beirut, Lebanon, in support of the Multinational Peace Keeping Force after the 1983 barracks bombing. His final military billet before retirement was at the Pentagon as the joint action control officer for the Marine Corps, and Officer-in-Charge of the Commandant of Marine Corps Headquarters. Mr. Lammon retired from the Marine Corps in 1995. On July 30, 1992, he married Martha Wilder in Ouray. Mr. Lammon began his civilian career as the equal employment officer for all Air Force installations in Alaska. He became the alternative dispute resolution champion for Elmendorf Air Force Base and the mediation mentor for the Pacific Air Forces. In 2007, Mr. Lammon was named director, Equal Opportunity, when the Air Force consolidated EEO and Military Equal Opportunity at Elmendorf. He went on to become the Equal Employment officer for the Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, in May 2009, a role he performed until his death. Throughout his life, as he had time, Mr. Lammon continued to pursue his art, specializing in unique acrylic sculptures of hands. Mr. Lammon is survived by his wife of 21 years, Martha Wilder of Anchorage; daughter, Alexandra Lammon of Sarasota, Fla.; sons, Jeremy Lammon and Joshua Lammon, both of Aurora; brother, Russell Lammon of Gilbertville, Iowa; sisters, Denise Witwer of Cortez and Darise Johnson of Baltimore; and four grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Elmendorf Chapel.
