He was a retired Lt. Colonel with the United States Air Force where he served as a pilot and air rescue helicopter pilot in Vietnam and was a broker sales associate for Century 21 AG, O'Fallon. He was a member of Gateway Flight No. 26, Order of Daedalians, Retired Officers Association, Moose Lodge 1221, American Legion Post No. 58; recipient of several medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Airman Medal and Air Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Medal. Preceding him in death were his parents, Glen D. and Helen L., nee McDonald, Layman. Surviving are his wife, the former Carolyn A. Wolcott; a son, Robert D. Layman of Kansas City, KS; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah J. and Major Barry Smith of Rhein Mein, AFB, Frankfurt, Germans; a brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Mary Layman of Robinson, IL; a sister Mrs. Stella Dellacca of Houston, TX; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Judy Wolcott of Fremont, CA.; two grandchildren, Justin A. and Aaron G. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home in Belleville, Burial will be held in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, MO. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Capt. Layman served a Vietnam War tour as a HH-43F pilot with Det. 6, 38th ARS (ARRS) in the 1965-time frame.
