More detail on this person: Richard Ira Lewis Richard Ira Lewis, age 74 of Bridgeville, DE passed away on Jan. 3, 2011 in Leesburg, VA. He was born in Milford, Delaware on April 18, 1936, son of the late Ira Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Ledenham Lewis. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years Katherine "Kay" Hammond Lewis , daughters Marybeth Lewis Conaway and husband Guy of Happy Valley, Oregon, and Margaret "Meg"Lewis McDyre and husband D.J. of Purcellville, VA, grandsons Trey and Richard McDyre and Drew and Josh Conaway; sister Sally Ann Baker and husband Tom of Bethany Beach, DE. Mr. Lewis was a decorated US Army Veteran having served nine years in various posts. He entered the service as a Second Lieutenant from the University of Delaware following his graduation in 1959. He attended pilots training and was a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal; Expert Infantry Badge; Republic of Viet Nam Service Medal; Viet Nam Campaign Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters; and the Purple Heart. After military service to his country he returned to own and operate the Lewis Insurance Agency and later become a partner in the Rawlins, Ferguson, Jones and Lewis Insurance Agency in Bridgeville, DE. He retired in 2008. Mr. Lewis was very community minded and served in many capacities throughout Sussex County. He was a Kiwanis Club member for 40 years, and was a past president and recipient of numerous distinguished Kiwanis awards, including the Hixon Award. He was a board member of Baltimore Trust and Mercantile Bank for 36 years and a member of its Executive Committee. Lewis was a past commissioner of the Town of Bridgeville and also served the Bridgeville Fire Department for 15 years. He was a member of Union Methodist Church in Bridgeville where he has held several leadership positions with the Administrative Committee, Pastor/Parish Relations Committee and the Finance Committee. He also served as a Lay Leader, member of the church choir and as a Sunday School teacher. The Delaware School Board Association (DSBA) recently honored Mr. Lewis with its Distinguished Service Award. He was president of the Sussex Technical School District School Board which he joined in August 1982. He served as its vice president in 1991 and 1992 and has been the Board's president since 1993. Lewis has been a member of the DSBA for 28 years. His vision, commitment, and dedication to the district facilitated and nurtured an environment which encourages creativity and risk-taking while clearly providing administration, faculty, and staff with board support and encouragement to pursue excellence. Memorial services will be held on Saturday January 8, 2011 at 11 AM at the Union United Methodist Church, Laws Street, Bridgeville, DE where friends may call after 9:30 AM. Burial will be private.
