Leathers, 63, of Britt, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at his home. He was born Sept. 5, 1936, in Cook to Frank and Mary (Jerome) Leathers. He was a 30-year veteran of the Army, beginning his career on Jan. 27, 1955, and retiring as chief warrant officer 4 on Sept. 30, 1987. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters (10 awards), Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Overseas Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Parachutist Badge and Helicopter Pilot's Wings. He was a Green Beret in the Special Forces. He had attended Oberammergau Language School in Bad Toelz, Germany, to learn German and was a member of the Crellin-Tini Post 1113, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a life member of Chapter 23, Disabled American Veterans, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughters, Ramona (Bill) Laffler, Bonnie (Daniel) Ortivez and Darnell (Brian) Setzer, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sharon (Billy) Azbell of St. Andrews, Scotland; stepchildren, John (Tammy) Petruska and Mary Beth Petruska, both of Britt; brothers, Chester Leathers of Eveleth and Albert Leathers of Hibbing; sisters, Florence (Louis) Anthony of Cook and Margaret (Ronald) Drobnick of Eveleth; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by brothers, James, Martin and Jerome Leathers, and sister, Mary Louise Pollock, and his parents. He was a test pilot for Lockheed-Martin and was a decorated war hero retired from the Army after 30 years of service. Mr. Leathers was born Sept. 5, 1936, in Cook, Minn. He was married in February 1995 to Mary Ann Petruska. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Ramona Laffler, Bonnie Ortivez, Darnell Setzer and Sharon Azbell; two brothers, Chester and Albert; two sisters, Margaret Drobnick and Florence Anthony; his former wife, Darlene Leathers; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
