More detail on this person: Apopka - Former Army Chief Warrant Officer William Thomas (Tom) Marshall, Jr., 68, died unexpectedly at his home in Apopka, FL on May 20. Tom was born on July 28, 1949 in Martinsville, VA to Tom and Mae (Compton) Marshall. In 1953 the family relocated to Pensacola, FL, where Tom spent the majority of his life. He was a 1967 graduate of Pensacola High School, lettering in football. In 1969 Tom married Patricia Mahan before joining the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot. He served one tour in Vietnam, from 1970-71, receiving the Bronze Star for meritorious service. At the end of his twelve-month tour, Tom had accumulated 1,087 hours of combat flying time. Tom's service in Vietnam was a defining period in his life and a source of tremendous pride. In 1998 he wrote a highly-acclaimed book, The Price of Exit, chronicling his experiences there. He was an active member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association since 1990, treasuring the relationships he shared with his fellow pilots. Tom's passion for flying was lifelong, and he was a licensed private pilot for many years. After his military service ended, Tom went back to school, graduating from Troy State University and spending the next 40 years as a professional commercial real estate appraiser in Pensacola and throughout the state of Florida, holding the prestigious MAI designation. Tom valued education, was a voracious reader, and loved to travel. He is preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Madelyn Marshall. He is survived by his sons, Andrew (Jess) Marshall of Woodinville, WA & Patrick (Jen) Marshall of Devon, PA; grandchildren, Brandon, Ryan & Emily Marshall of Devon, PA; brother, Steve (Brenda) Marshall of Winter Park, FL; nephew Brittain Marshall & niece Marina Marshall, both of Winter Park, FL and his former wife, Patricia Marshall of Devon, PA. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 10 at the First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, FL. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
