More detail on this person: Terry Sims McLelland, an American hero, died August 22, 2021. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, August 25, 2021, 10:00 a.m., at Mt. Hilliard Cemetery with Dr. Robbins Sims officiating and Gray Funeral Home directing. Terry was born on the Fourth of July, Auburn, Alabama, 1948. The son of Shelton W. and Ellen Sims McLelland, Terry grew up in Auburn, Montgomery and Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Druid Hills High School, and enrolled at Auburn University. He joined the U.S. Army Aviation Program, First Cavalry Division. He attended Flight School in Ft. Rucker, Alabama, and Ft. Wolters, Mineral Wells, Texas. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer II and served his Country proudly as a Helicopter Gunship Pilot, 92nd Armored Group, codename "Sidekick". Terry celebrated his 21st birthday in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. He earned several medals for service and bravery, including the Purple Heart. He married Darlene W. Merriman of Atlanta, Georgia in 1966. The marriage ended in divorce, 1984. They were blessed with Brad Sims McLelland of Brunswick and St. Simon's Island, Georgia. Two years later, Mac Brant McLelland completed their family. Brad, a lawyer practicing in Brunswick, wife Stacey Sudge and daughter Lauren Abigail McLelland live on St. Simon's Island. Mac and Amy Worden live in Vermilion, Ohio, where they own and operate Quarry Hill Winery on the shores of Lake Erie. Their three children are Connor Mac, Emma Marie and Collin James. Terry was married a second time to Tina Simpson of Gainesville, Georgia. He spent several years in the Land Clearing and Pond Construction business. Terry is also survived by his brother, Dr. James Shelton McLelland of Newnan, Georgia, and Sue Ellen Marable of Georgetown, Texas. There are numerous nieces and nephews that loved and respected Uncle Terry. He leaves many friends and relatives who admired and will miss this man of substance and character. Terry left his world, "Sweet Home" a better and more beautiful place. Pallbearers will be Robert Fuller, Kent McLelland, Jacob McLelland, Caleb McLelland, Burnis Horton, and Mark Gregg. Honorary pallbearers will be Patrick Marable, Dan Ashley, Richard L. Hudson, Tom Sims, Jeffrey Evans, and James McAfee. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mt. Hilliard Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 447, Union Springs, Alabama 36089.
