More detail on this person: Lanny Jay McCrary BATTLE CREEK, Iowa -- Lanny Jay McCrary, 61, formerly of Battle Creek, passed away June 4, 2005, in Ida Grove, Iowa. Lanny was born on Aug. 2, 1943, in Amarillo, Texas, the son of L.S. and Mary (Richardson) McCrary. He attended school in Amarillo and excelled in athletics. He graduated from West Texas State in 1965 and married Bobbi Vachon. They later divorced. Lanny served in Vietnam as an Army helicopter pilot in 1967-68 and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and twice received the Air Medal, one with Valor. He was honorably discharged as a captain. Upon returning to civilian life, he moved to Denver, Colo., where he met Connie Rogge. They were married in 1976. He was a principal with Battle Creek Growers. Later, he was employed by the Dubuque Pack in Denison, Iowa. In 1980, the McCrarys moved to the Colorado/Utah state line, where they worked on a cattle ranch until moving to California in 1988. Lanny was then employed by the Redwood City School District. Most recently, he was employed by Home Depot in Bend, Ore. Lanny was active as a Scout leader, a baseball coach and a Serra Padre booster. Survivors include a daughter, Heather Howard of Houston, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Preston and Kelly McCrary of San Mateo, Calif.; a brother, Lee McCrary of Amarillo; Connie McCrary of Battle Creek; several nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother.
