More detail on this person: James Harrison McWhorter, age 93, of Winchester Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born February 24, 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Harrison and Ruby McWhorter. After a long and adventure filled life as a Husband, Father, Army officer and Real estate agent/broker, he and his wife Jane retired, settled in Huntsville Alabama and Winchester Tennessee. He married Jane Swanson on June 25, 1953 in LaGrange, IL. He served in the Army for 25 years in numerous states and countries including: Wurtzburg, Germany; Ft Bragg, NC; Teague, Korea; Ft Lewis, WA; Ft Rucker, AL; two tours in Vietnam: Friendly, MD (Pentagon); Ft Riley. KS. He was an amazing father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved nature, being near or in the water, travel and family visits. He was a member and president of the Huntsville Board of Realtors, member of North Alabama Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, executive with the Boy Scouts of America, board member of the Girl Scouts of North Alabama Council, and a member of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. He was a member of the Goshen Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was very appreciative, loving and giving as expressed by a common saying throughout his house: I AM BLESSED BECAUSE YOU ARE IN MY LIFE! Jim is survived by his loving daughter Laura Butler (and husband Joe) of Winchester, Tennessee; sons Tom McWhorter (and wife Gail) of Yorktown, Virginia, and Dan McWhorter (and wife Barbara) of Lavallette, New Jersey; sister-in-law Ragnhild Swanson of LaGrange, Illinois; sister-in-law Joan Swanson of Tucson, AZ; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane; father Harrison McWhorter and his mother Ruby McWhorter; his brother Jeff McWhorter; and his granddaughter Melissa Miner. A funeral service will be held at Goshen Cumberland Presbyterian Church (1262 Williams Cove Rd. Winchester TN) on May 30, 2025 at 10:00 am with visitation from 8:00 am to service time. In addition a Military Graveside service will be held in Huntsville, Alabama at the Valhalla Memory Gardens (698 Winchester Rd. NE Huntsville, AL) on May 30, 2025 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Tennessee Ornithological Society (bird club) c/o Liz Huber 1303 Little Hurricane Rd., Winchester TN 37398 Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for the McWhorter family may be shared at www.gallantfuneralhome.com.
