More detail on this person: LTC James Douglas Marett His father died when he was 13 and he and his mother moved to Tamassee DAR School where she was to be the school dietician. After graduating from Tamassee High School, Doug went on to graduate from Clemson University in 1953. He received his military commission from Clemson and then entered military service. He met his wife at Tamassee where she was teaching, and celebrated their 58th anniversary in May 2008. During his 21 years of active duty military service in the U.S. Army, he served tours in Taiwan, Korea and two tours in Vietnam. Doug was a highly decorated fixed wing and helicopter pilot. He was awarded the Silver Star for heroism under enemy fire, the nations third highest combat medal, the Bronze Star with "V" for valor, three awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous other citations and medals. He held the U.S. Army's Master Aviator designation with over 6,000 hours, 3,000 of which were in combat and a commercial airplane pilots license. He was a member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association and a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College. Doug retired from military service to serve as the Administrator at Tamassee DAR School from 1974 to 1980. Doug's civic service included being an officer and lifetime member of both the American Legion and the Military Officer's Association of America (MOAA). He was a member of the Walhalla Rotary Club and served as its president for one year. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with Barnett Lodge #106 A.F.M. Doug was a lifelong Clemson football fan, an IPTAY member of 21 years, and had not missed a home football game in over a decade.
