More detail on this person: Joseph Upton Moffett May 7, 1938 - January 8, 2016 Dillon, SC Wichita Falls, TX Joseph (Joe) Upton Moffett, age 77, passed into the hands of The Lord, on 8 January 2016 at MUSC, Charleston, SC. Mr. Moffett was born May 7, 1938 in Wichita Falls, TX to the late Jo O'Donohoe and Worthy S. Moffett. Joe was a retired Army officer who commanded at all levels to include battalion. He was a Senior Army Aviator, Ranger and was Airborne qualified. He was a Vietnam Veteran, who flew escort gunships for transport helicopters, airlifting troops into combat. He was awarded many medals. His squadron was called The Mavericks. His career took him many places, to include Korea, Germany, and The Netherlands. Joe grew up in Corpus Christi, TX and was a graduate of Roy Miller High School where he was an All-District Selection in football and baseball for the Buccaneers. He still enjoyed a small group of "Old Bucs" and their reunions. Joe was inducted into the Buccaneer Hall of Fame in 2012. He attended Texas Christian University on a football scholarship where he played in the Cotton Bowl and the first Bluebonnet Bowl. In 1961, at graduation, Joe was designated as a Distinguished Military Student from TCU and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the regular Army. Before moving to Dillon, he worked for Saudi ARAMCO in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Joe was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served on many committees. He also served on the Marion United Methodist District Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Fishers of Men Prayer Breakfast, an Emmaus reunion group, the United Methodist Men and the George Taylor Sunday School Class. He was active in the Dillon community. He served on the Dillon County Voter Registration Board. He was a past president of Twin Lakes Country Club, a member of the Dillon County Lions Club and a Republican State Executive Committeeman. Mr. Moffett is survived by his wife of forty years, Helen Brennecke Moffett; son, Joseph Kevin Moffett (Wendy) of Bedford, TX; daughter, Kristen Wilkey, of Hope Mills, NC; grandchildren: Peyton, Parker, Payge, Thomas, Josh and Jasmine; brother, John E. Moffett (Nancy); sister-in-law, Alice B. Braddy, of Dillon.; and brother-in-law, Sid Brennecke (Bernice), of Bessemer City, NC. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Bob Braddy. Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, PO Box 229, Dillon, SC 29536, or the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church, 401 East Main Street, Dillon, at 3 PM on Thursday. Visitation will be held at 2 PM in Asbury Hall prior to the service. Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon is assisting the family.
