More detail on this person: Long Island Tuskegee Airman Eddie Monroe Is Laid To Rest Long Island Tuskegee Airman Eddie Monroe Is Laid To Rest Levittown Tribune (NY) - Friday, June 8, 2012 On Wednesday, May 30, retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Eddie Monroe, of Freeport, died. Monroe, a combat helicopter pilot during WWII, was among the airmen of the elite squadron of African American pilots, the Tuskegee Airmen. Once topping more than 1, 000 airmen and support troops, the esteemed Tuskegee Airmen are now approximated to be less than 200 remaining, nationally. Monroe retired from the army in 1976. He moved to Freeport and became the village's first African American school board member. Monroe has served as the past president of the Long Island Claude B. Govan chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, and as the chapter's representative in the United Veterans'Organization (UVO). He was a retired administrator of Nassau Community College and the Teachers College at Columbia University. He was also a community activist, school and community board official. Monroe earned his masters degrees from Hofstra University, and Columbia University. Monroe owned Ed's Plumbing Services and Environmental Engineering Associates, was a Rotarian, and a member of the 100 Black Men organization; he was a highly awarded citizen for myriad affiliations and efforts He was 80 years old, and is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, a great-grandchild, two brothers and their families. Church services were held at Freeport United Methodist Church on Pine Street, and at Zion Cathedral. Monroe will be buried in North Carolina.
