More detail on this person: MITCHELL RICHARD R. MITCHELL "Dick" Colonel, US Army (Ret.) Formerly of South Riding, VA, passed away on May 18, 2017 in Florence, AL, age 77. He was born in Indianapolis on Christmas Eve 1939 to Richard T. "Dick" and Mary Katherine "Kay" Mitchell. Enlisting in the Army in 1962, he earned Army Aviator wings and appointment as a Warrant Officer 1 in 1964. Dick married Alice Katherine "Kathy" Worthington of Ozark, AL in September 1965 before deploying to Vietnam to join the 197th Armed Helicopter Company. He received a direct commission to Second Lieutenant in May 1966. After multi-engine fixed wing transition, it was back to Vietnam in 1969 to fly RU-8 aircraft with the 224th Radio Research Battalion. From here on, Dick was an acknowledged expert and pioneer in Army Special Electronic Mission Aircraft. As a Lieutenant Colonel he commanded 2nd Military Intelligence Battalion (AE) in Stuttgart, Germany, 1986 to 1988. Promoted to Colonel, Dick completed National War College in 1989, and served in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence until retiring from the Army in 1993. Through 1999 he was manager at Raytheon and SAIC. Awards and decorations include: Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Air Medal with V (38), and the Master Aviator Badge. Though medical issues impaired his ability to fully enjoy retirement, he remained a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. COL Mitchell leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Kathy Mitchell, daughters, Kara Mitchell Smith (Bill) of South Riding, Amy Mitchell and Brian Cote of Las Vegas, NV, and grandchildren, Mitchell Bowers, Ashley Pearce and Lauren Smith. Memorial service 9 a.m., March 9, 2018 at the Old Post Chapel, Ft. Meyer, followed by interment at Arlington National Cemetery.Memorial service 9 a.m., March 9, 2018 at the Old Post Chapel, Ft.
