David Marshall, 80, of Matthews, NC, went to be
with the Lord on February 13, 2017 at CMC
Hospital, Charlotte, NC, after battling heart and
kidney problems for several years.
David was born January 7, 1937 in Charlottesville,
VA, the son of the late Woodie Gordon and Mildred
Miller Marshall.
David was graduated from Lane High School in
Charlottesville in 1955, attended the University
of Virginia, and was graduated from Auburn
University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Aviation
Management. He also earned an M.A. in History
from The University of Kansas in 1973 and an M.Ed.
from George Mason University in 1992.
In 1960 he married the former Harriet Harnsberger
(who survives him).
COL Marshall retired from the U.S. Army in 1989
after serving nearly twenty-nine years. He was
both fixed wing and rotary wing qualified. In 1965
he deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division in the
17th Aviation Co. which flew their Caribou
aircraft from Ft. Benning, Georgia to Vietnam,
island hopping from the West Coast across the
Pacific. In 1967 he returned to Vietnam with the
192nd Assault Helicopter Co. and finished his
second tour as Executive Officer of the 129th
Assault Helicopter Co. His Army years also
included several military schools concluding with
the NATO Defense College in Rome. He served in
DCSOPS on the Dept. of the Army Staff and in J-3
in the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Service also included two tours in Germany,
including in J-3 in the US European Command in
Stuttgart as his last assignment before
retirement. COL Marshall was awarded the Bronze
Star and Air Medals for service in Vietnam, the
Legion of Merit for service on the Army Staff, and
the Defense Distinguished Superior Service Medal
upon retirement.
David was a member of Christ Covenant Church
(Presbyterian Church in America) in Matthews, NC.
Before moving to NC he and his wife were members
of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg,
VA where he served as an elder, as he had earlier
at McLean Presbyterian Church in Northern
Virginia. He served on the Board of Trustees of
Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, GA and was
active in the Blue Ridge Presbytery of the
Presbyterian Church in America.
In addition to his wife David is also survived by
three children: Walter David Marshall Jr. and his
wife, Sharon, of San Diego, CA; Amy M. Dillon and
her husband, Scott, of Rock Hill, SC; and Rev.
Greg Marshall and his wife, Ruthanna, of Clover,
SC; and by fourteen grandchildren: Calvin, Abby,
Ann, Dustin, Samantha, and Emma Marshall of San
Diego, CA; Stephen and his wife Kayla, James,
Andrew, and Rebecca Dillon of Rock Hill, SC; and
Timothy, Jonathan, Annagrace, and Caleb Marshall
of Clover, SC. He is also survived by his sister,
Adele M. Conniff, and her husband, Martin, of
Darien, CT, and nieces and nephew, Carrie Conniff
McNicoll and her husband Graham; Catherine
Conniff; and David and Heather Conniff.
The graveside service will be held at 1PM on
Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Matthews Historic
Cemetery with full military honors. A memorial
service will follow at 2PM at Christ Covenant
Church with the Rev. Greg Marshall and the Rev.
Bruce Creswell officiating. The family will
receive friends following the service.
