More detail on this person: Charles Henry Mathews Jr. of Scranton died Thursday November 22, 2018 at the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital. His wife of 19 years is Eileen Mathews. Born in Ligonier he was the son of the late Charles H. and M. Ellen Mathews Sr. He graduated from Ligonier Valley High School in 1954. He was the class president both junior & senior years. He joined the Army, he retired as a Major after 22 years of service in 1970. He received 3 purple hearts & did 3 tours in Vietnam. He also served in Korea. He was also an Airborne Ranger. After retirement he was employed by PennDot as Superintendent for highways and bridges for the city of Scranton. He earned his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from Heidelberg University in Germany & also from the same University he has a degree in Business Administration. He is a life member for Veterans of Foreign Wars. He's a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Union Masonic Lodge #291 Scranton & a member of the Irem Temple Shriners. He participated in the Oriental Band for them. He was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for 25 years. He liked to travel. He's been to 67 different countries. He was very social. He used to say that he never met a stranger. He enjoyed spending time with his family. His favorite music was Ragtime & Country music. His favorite tune was The Entertainer. He enjoyed watching the History Channel. He was also a HAM radio operator. He passed his love for HAM radio on to his Grandson, Chuck Mathews IV. Also surviving children Charles H. Mathews III & wife Holly, Iowa, Robert Mathews Louisiana, Teresa Mathews, Pennsylvania, and Steven Mathews & his wife Emalin, Texas; stepchildren: Jennifer Martirano & husband, Anthony Louis Gambucci & wife Susan, all of Pennsylvania; siblings, Ellis Mathews, Florida, Mary Ellen Mathews, California, Rose Anne Smith, Texas, Richard Mathews, Florida; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren He was preceded in death by step-daughter Lori Smigiel; brothers Thomas and David Mathews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 7:00 pm in the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave. Scranton. Friends and family may pay their respects Thursday from 4:00 pm until the time of service. Masonic services will be held at 6:45 P.m. offered by the Union Lodge #291. Interment with full military Honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
