Matthews, 65, of Bradenton, died April 30, 2003, in River Park Senior Residence, Bradenton. Memorial service will be 2:15 p.m. Monday at Bay Pines National Cemetery, with a U.S. Army chaplain officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Bradenton Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238. Born in Wade, N.C., Captain Matthews came to Manatee County from Miami in 2002. He retired in 1978 from the U.S. Army; he served during the Vietnam and Korean wars. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen G.; a daughter, Therese E. Grimsley of Boca Raton; two sisters, Fay McFatter of Bradenton, and Jean, of Gibsonton; two brothers, H. Ray, of Nashville, N.C., and Billy M., of Pensacola; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
