More detail on this person: CW02 Retired Carl Mecum, 82, passed away peacefully, January 16, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born November 19, 1935 in Caldwell County, the son of the late Clarence Mecum and Julia Bolick Mecum. Carl was a retired helicopter pilot with the United States Army. He was a member South Gastonia Church of God. He loved his family and church family and above all he loved God. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh and bringing joy to others. He will be missed by many. Left to cherish his memories are his sons Dennis Mecum (Beverly), Timothy Mecum; daughter, Carla Gregory (J.D.); sister Louise Huffstetler; grandchildren James, Lauren, Erin and John; great-grandchildren, Noah, Chloe, Will, Kayden and Emily. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeweline "Jean" Mecum; brother, Floyd Mecum; sisters Edna Dover and Margie Johnson. A celebration of life will be held 6 pm Thursday, January 18, 2018 at South Gastonia Church of God, officiated by the Revs. Bobby Gilley and Sam Barnette. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to South Gastonia Church of God, 310 Carolina Avenue, Gastonia, NC 28052.
