More detail on this person: David B. Menig, age 76, passed at his San Antonio home January 6, 2018. He was born on July 25, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA to Robert Earl and Doris Elizabeth Menig, both deceased. David graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle, WA and Washington State University. In 1964, he entered the Army and served as an Artillery officer and helicopter pilot. After the Army he served in Dept. of Defense School System as an instructor and as Chief of Staff of the DoDSS Pacific Region. He later served with US Army Installation Management Command at Ft Sam Houston, Texas. David enjoyed activities with the Masons, Lions Club, Boy Scouts and playing the San Shin instrument. He is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, one brother, other relatives and many friends. Captain Menig was with the 128th AHC. Here is the info we have on him from our unit data base: Menig, David Captain, Security and Intelligence Officer 10/, 1966) (Pg. 73 , 1966) SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE: Captain David Menig was assigned as the Security and Intelligence Officer at the beginning of OCTOBER, and was responsible for promoting the use of the important situation map which the aviators now use to aid in planning flights. This map is posted, updated and available for immediate use at any time. Menig, David Captain, Security and Intelligence Officer 10/, 1966) (Pg. 76, 1966) Up to 20 OCTOBER the "TOMAHAWKS" once again reverted to general support and went out on single ship missions. Then on 20 OCTOBER, the "TOMAHAWKS" were joined by the 162nd Assault Helicopter Company to move a Ranger Battalion of the 5th ARVN Division. Previously, whenever the air movement of ARVN troops occurred some confusion and language problems ensued. However, this move was planned and the pathfinders were used to break down the aircraft loads and carry' out the necessary coordination.. As a result of this effort the move from Lom Som to Chon Thanh was very smooth. Upon the completion off the ARVN Ranger Battalion lift, the TOMAHAWKS once again supported Duchess. This time, for about 3 days, while Duchess maneuvered just across the river from Phu Cuong. During this time the RON requirement was at the TEEPEE, which was most desirable. However, to keep the tradition of timing that was developed during Baton Rouge it seemed that every move was scheduled during adverse weather. This resulted in several moves conducted under minimum visibility. Also, during this operation, while on a five-ship lift, Capt. Dave Menig successfully made a forced landing with a full load of troops after his engine caught fire. He landed about 50 meters short of the scheduled LZ and security was available. Once again Witch Doctor was called and the aircraft evacuated.
