More detail on this person: Ronald Lee Meyer, 75, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 19 in
Fort Collins, Colo. Dutch, as his friends knew him, was born on July 2, 1936 in Hastings, Neb. In
1946 his family moved to Fort Collins. Ron graduated from Fort Collins High School and Colorado
State University.
He enlisted in the United States Army and was commissioned as an officer in 1959, eventually
obtaining the rank of Major. Ron was a soldier and served with the famed Army 101st Airborne
Division. He received numerous medals and honors, including the Bronze Star Medal with a 2nd Oak
Leaf Cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Vietnam
Cross of Gallantry with Palms. He flew a number of aircraft in his military career, including the
famed Cobra attack helicopter. Ron served multiple tours in Vietnam and returned to Vietnam many
times to train Vietnamese pilots. He
retired from active duty in 1979 and served in the Army Reserves for an additional six years. Ron
was a tireless advocate of the rights of veterans. His loyalty to Americans who served our country
was strong and unyielding, and he took great pride and joy in his efforts with the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans, where he served as commander of DA V Chapter 5.
He also loved fishing and camping near Red Feather Lakes.
Ron was predeceased by his father and mother, Peter Meyer and Marie Scheierman Meyer, both of Fort
Collins. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Meyer of Fort Collins, his daughter and son in law,
Teresa L. Matthies and Scott A. Matthies of Loveland, and his three sons and daughters-in-law,
Jeffery A. Meyer and Holly A. Meyer of Columbus, Ga., Steven L. Meyer and Susan S. Meyer of
Charlotte, N.C., and Paul D. Meyer and Jennifer M. Meyer of Savannah, Ga. Ron is survived by seven
wonderful grandchildren: Jessica Matthies of Loveland, Kristen C. Humber and Garrett Meyer of
Columbus, Ga., Jacob and Abby Meyer of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Harry and Mary Jane Meyer of
Savannah, Ga.
Interment, with full military honors, will be held later, at Fort Logan National Cemetery. In lieu
of flowers the family requests donations be sent to your local DAV chapter. This information and
