More detail on this person: BRADFORD B. MEYERS PILOT WHO FLEW THROUGH HURRICANES BRADFORD B. MEYERS PILOT WHO FLEW THROUGH HURRICANES Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - Thursday, December 14, 1995 Bradford B. Meyers, whose flying career with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration took him through the eyes of hurricanes, died Tuesday at Canonsburg General Hospital. An autopsy was to be performed, his wife, Ann Patton Meyers, said yesterday. Mr. Meyers was rushed to the hospital after becoming ill Tuesday. Mr. Meyers, 51, who lived in Peters, ran to stay in shape for his job as a first officer for USAir. "He loved flying," his wife said. Mr. Meyers earned his pilot's license as a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps while studying for a degree in physics at the University of Colorado. After graduation, he was sent to Vietnam, where he was a Marine Corps helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War in 1968 and 1969. He completed his military service as a helicopter instructor pilot from 1969 to 1972 in Pensacola, Fla., where he attended the University of West Florida. He received a master's degree in business in 1970. In 1972, Mr. Meyers became a commander of NOAA's Commissioned Corps -- the country's smallest uniformed service established in 1807 by President Thomas Jefferson. As pilots and scientists for the agency, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the officers fly planes into hurricanes to get data for the National Weather Service, a sister agency. During his tenure, Mr. Meyers helped the corps update nautical charts, surface surveys and aeronautical sectional charts used by ships and airplanes for safe navigation. Mr. Meyers particularly enjoyed the hurricane research. "I thought he was part Viking. He had so much courage," his wife said. "He loved the equipment, the technology -- everything that made the research possible." The Meyers family summered in Glen Arbor, Mich., where Mr. Meyers enjoyed fishing on his small Boston whaler. In 1988, Mr. Meyers joined USAir, preferring to confine his flying to shorter trips so he could be home with his wife and three daughters, Elizabeth B., Lillian P. and Margaret H. Ann Meyers said he had last been on a day flying trip with USAir on Sunday. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mt. Lebanon. In addition to his wife and daughters, Mr. Meyers is survived by three brothers, George J. III of Annapolis, Md., Robert H. of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and William A. of Boulder, Colo. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Beinhauers, 2828 Washington Road, Peters. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Washington and Mayfair roads, Mt. Lebanon. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington City Mission, 84 W. Wheeling St., Washington, Pa. 15301.
