Molick Sr., a combat pilot in three wars who was assigned to fly Lyndon B. Johnson's presidential aircraft, died Sunday of cancer at Stella Maris Hospice. He was 78. The longtime Middle River resident flew in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He began flying President Johnson's plane while he was vice president. After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Mr. Molick was assigned to the Executive Flight Detachment and assumed command of Air Force One, a converted Boeing 707. Mr. Molick was born and raised in Bohl, Minn., and enlisted as an aviation cadet in the Navy in 1942. Commissioned a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, he flew combat missions in the Pacific. During the Korean War, he flew combat rescue missions. In 1967, he left the Executive Flight Detachment and went into the Army, flying combat rescue missions in Vietnam. He was discharged in 1969. Among his many decorations are two Distinguished Flying Crosses and six Air Medals. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 6027 in North East and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Mr. Molick married Lois Worden in 1946. She died in 1996. A daughter, Linda L. Grove, died in November. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Connolly Funeral Home of Essex, 300 Mace Ave. He is survived by two sons, Roy J. Molick Jr. of Pasadena and William D. Molick of Dundalk; two daughters, Joycelyn R. Adkins of Allentown, Pa., and Kathleen S. Haag of White Marsh; a brother, Robert Molick of Chisolm, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
