Two Patrolmen Are Killed as Police Helicopter Crashes in Queens MARCH 2, 1970 Two patrolmen, one of whom a former Army helicopter pilot who had 'been shot down twice in Vietnam, were killed yesterday when their Police Department helicopter crashed in the drive way of a Glen Oaks, Queens, home while on a routine traffic patrol. The police said that the crash took place at 5:50 P.M., in the driveway of the home of Francis Dignon at 82?22 262d Street. The two patrolmen, Patrick Harrington, 30 years old of Syosset, I., and Joseph Mariconda, 26 of Pelham Manor, N. Y., had left Floyd Bennett Field; Brooklyn, in the jet Bell Ranger helicopter at 5:15 P.M. to make a routine traffic check and were scheduled to return at 6:15 P.M. Patrolman Maricond2a, the pilot, had been with the department and attached to its aviation bureau for 18 months. He had flown in combat in Vietnam. Patrolman Harrington joined the department in 1964 and the Aviation Bureau about a month ago. He had previously been a civilian flight instructor. The police said that ground radio operators had no indication that the $60,000 air craft was in any difficulty before it suddenly lost power. The tail of the helicopter reportedly hit the Dignon house as it crashed but none of the three persons in the house were injured. A small fire caused by the crash was quickly extinguished.
