More detail on this person: Charles "Poe"¥ Elmore Myers Sr., 79, of Westminster, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born April 23, 1933, in Brookneal, Va., he was the son of the late Alfred N. Myers Sr. and Mary Elmore Myers. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Famularia Myers; and of Jean Staub Myers.

He graduated from Westminster High School in 1951 and the Merchant Marine Academy in 1955. Before retiring he was a naval aviator with the Navy and then worked several years for Naylors Plumbing.

He was a Stephen minister and helped with soup kitchens. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the VFW Molleville Farm Post No. 467, American Legion Carroll Post No. 31 and the Westminster Elks Lodge No. 2277.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons and daughter-in-law Charles Elmore Myers Jr., of Newport News, Va., and Scott C. and Sue Myers, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law Michele and Tim Shortley, of Laytonsville; a step-daughter, Jennifer Lewis, of Austin, Texas; brothers and sister-in-laws David H. and Christine Myers, of Hattiesburg, Miss., John P. and Violet Myers, of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; a sister, Mary Emma Bowen, of Westminster; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Leigh Anne Lewis; and brothers Alfred N. Myers Jr. and Joseph W. Myers Sr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St. Westminster, with his pastors, the Revs. Kevin and Martha Clementson co-officiating. Inurnment, with military honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
