More detail on this person: Maynard A. Nagelhout died December 21st, 2017 following a prolonged illness. Surrounded by family, he passed peacefully at his home in Alexandria, Virginia. Maynard was born to William and Helen (Bleeker) Nagelhout in South Dakota. He was raised on his family's Hamlin County farm near Bemis, South Dakota. He attended a rural country school, then graduated from Castlewood H.S. He was a highly regarded high school athlete, particularly in basketball. After graduating in 1956, he married his high school sweetheart Sharon D. Miller. He attended South Dakota State College where he majored in Electrical Engineering; he was also involved in Army ROTC. Upon graduation, Maynard immediately joined the army and began a long and successful military career. He was a helicopter pilot and served overseas in Germany and Vietnam. Between his three Vietnam deployments, he was a flight instructor at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He was awarded the Bronze Star, 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster and Valorous Unit Award. He was a research and development coordinator for 12 years. He received the Army's R & D Team Achievement Award for development of laser technology. He took the laser target designator system to the 1st Air Calvary Division for implementation in Viet Nam. Maynard achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and finished his career at the Pentagon and retired in 1983 after 22 years in the Army. After his military career, Maynard started, and served as CEO of, Applied Resources Inc. Rosslyn VA, a defense contracting company. He had offices in Alexandria VA, Huntsville AL, and Orlando FL. He retired at age 75. Maynard enjoyed spending time with his family and beach vacations. He also loved fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. He loved spending time in the Solomons MD, with his children and grandchildren. Maynard is survived by his wife Sharon; His son, David( Sela) of Harrisburg, SD; his daughter, Debra Newhall (Ben) of Olney, Maryland; and daughter, DiAnn Park (Bob) of Vienna, Virginia; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Nagelhout, and Brother, Donald. The visitation will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, Old Town Alexandria. Burial will be at the Arlington National Cemetery. June 6th 2018.
