More detail on this person: NUTTER, COLONEL (RET) RAYMOND T., 76, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN. Ray was born on January 24, 1930 in Georgetown, KY to the late Georgia Hawkins Nutter and William Thomas Nutter. He attended Nicholasville high School where he played football and basketball. Upon graduation from high school, Ray played football for Coach Bear Bryant at the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship before transferring to Western Kentucky University. At Western he also played football on a football scholarship and played on Western's 1952 Refrigerator Bowl Championship football team. Upon graduation from Western, Ray was commissioned in the U.S. Army from which he retired many years later with the rank of Colonel after a distinguished military career during which his combat service in Viet Nam earned numerous citations for valor, including the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest medal for valor. An avid sports fan, Ray coached a number of service football and basketball teams and was very active in both the organization and coaching of Vienna Youth Incorporated, Vienna, Virginia, receiving recognition by selection to that organization's Hall of Fame. A long-time resident of Bowling Green, KY, Ray was a member and former president of the "W" Club, and a Rotarian. For several years he had been active in residential construction and property management in Bowling Green. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Nutter and Georgia Hawkins Nutter. Ray is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bobbie Jean Atwood; a daughter, Gina McIntosh and her husband, Barry; and a son, Michael Nutter and his wife, Billie Jo. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held at the J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel, Bowling Green, KY from 1-8 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2006 with a service at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2006. There will also be a service and burial in Arlington National Cemetery on a date and time to be determined.
