More detail on this person: CHARLOTTE Charles Lovette Nesbit, Sr., 88, a resident of Charlotte, NC, died on August 23 after a brief illness. He was born to Joseph Grier Nesbit and Carrie Lovette Nesbit on June 24, 1930, in Winston-Salem, NC, the fourth of eight children. After graduating from Monteverde Academy in Florida and attending Duke University, Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart, and then was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He married Patricia (Patsy) Tucker in 1953 and they enjoyed 61 years together before she died in 2014. Charles' and Patsy's families were from Pleasant Garden, NC, where they met. A career Marine, Charles earned his pilot wings and served primarily in aviation. He was a helicopter pilot in the presidential flight detail for Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy, and he commanded helicopter squadron HMM-162. He earned a second Purple Heart and other combat decorations in Vietnam. In 1978, he retired from the Marine Corps as a lieutenant colonel. He and his wife resided near Swansboro, NC and in Winston-Salem, NC. They were antique dealers specializing in American glass and avid collectors of traditional North Carolina pottery. They also traveled throughout the United States and abroad. In 2005, they moved to the Aldersgate Retirement Community in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region or the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 26, 2018, 1:30 p.m. at the chapel at Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community at 3800 Shamrock Drive in Charlotte.
