More detail on this person: NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Col (Ret) USA, Albert Newton, 96, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of almost 67 years, Blanche Marian LeMan Newton; son William Sterling Newton and his wife Cathleen O'Donnell; daughter Audrey Lynne Newton; granddaughters Meghan and Michelle Newton; grandson Gary Howard Newton, Jr., and sister-in-law, Florence C. Wynn. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Howard Newton. Born in Hartford, CT, he received a BS from the City College of New York and an MBA in Transportation from the University of Southern California. He was a decorated veteran of WWII. Korea, and Vietnam. He was a commissioned 2nd Lt. (Infantry) in 1941 and served as a platoon leader. During WWII, he was a member of General Stillwell's staff. He sailed to India in 1942, flew the Burma "Hump" in 1943, and established training bases in China where he served as weapons and tactics instructor. This period included patrol behind Japanese lines. After WWII he initially was stationed at the Pentagon. From there to NY Port of Embarkation, to Korea, to Japan, to flight school (fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft) in Texas and Alabama, to Ft. Riley, KS, to the Army War College, Carlisle, PA, to Germany, to St. Louis, MO, and finally to Ft. Monroe, VA from where he retired in 1972. He earned many decorations during his military career. Among these were: Distinguished member of the Transportation Corps Regiment, Air Medal, Army Aviator wings, Legion of Merit (first oak leaf cluster), Army Commendation medal (with oak leaf cluster), and Commendation ribbon with metal pendants. He was very active in volunteer work, especially in Kiwanis where he rose to serve in various leadership positions. He was also an avid golfer and both he and his wife achieved holes in one well after their 70's. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the charity of your choice.
