Neel Jr., 58, of Holliston, Mass, formerly of Hanover, died Monday, June 16, 2003, while undergoing an angioplasty procedure. He was the husband of Jackie (Hartman) Neel. Born Nov. 14, 1944, in York, he was the son of Eugene S. Neel Sr. and the late Mary Jane (Keller) Neel. He attended Eichelberger High and Dickinson College before enlisting in the Army. While serving, he completed aviation maintenance training; was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant after completing Officer's Candidate School; and, following in his father's footsteps, attended flight school and earned his wings as an Army aviator. He also served as a flight commander at the Army's Rotary Wing Flight Training School in Mineral Wells, Texas. He served two tours in Vietnam as an aviator, where he participated in the recapture of the American Embassy in Saigon on Feb. 26, 1968, by landing troops on the embassy roof during the Tet offensive. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster; the Air Medal with V Device; the Bronze Star Medal; the Purple Heart; and more than 40 Oak Leaf Clusters. After attaining the rank of captain, he left the service to further his education, obtaining a degree in engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso. He became a senior partner with Nielson's Inc. of Cortez, Colo., and moved on to his most recent post, senior engineer with the firm of Peter Kiewit in Boston. Surviving also are two daughters, Leslie Little and Shelly Belcher; three sons, Chris, Travis and Justin Neel; two grandchildren; a brother, Tom Neel; and a sister, Suzanne (Neel) Neil. Memorial services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Hanover. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Salem United Church Cemetery, Dover.
