More detail on this person: Retired colonel, civic leader Nemethy is dead at 82 Retired Col. Frank Joseph Nemethy, a farmer, civic leader and career soldier who saw combat in three wars, died Saturday afternoon at age 82 following a long illness. Funeral services for Nemethy, a resident of 5446 Binns Mill Road, Herndon, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Maddux Funeral Home, Hopkinsville. Burial with full military honors will be at Alsobrooks Cemetery, Erin, Tenn., with Chaplain (Capt.) Jan Kohlmann and the Rev. Ralph McConnell officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. A native of Detroit, Nemethy was born July 9, 1917, the son of the late Frank J. Nemethy Jr. and Nellie Eileen Gillon Nemethy. A 30-year career as an Army infantry officer took him to flash points around the world, from duty under the midnight sun in Alaska to service in the jungles of Southeast Asia. World War II was raging when he graduated from Officer Candidate School in January 1943 and was dispatched to the Attu-Kiska campaign in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. Nemethy subsequently was transferred to Europe, serving in both major theaters of the war and in the postwar occupation of Germany. During the Korean War, he served in infantry posts both in Korea and in Japan. In 1964-65, Nemethy was detailed as a senior military adviser in the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. He retired from active duty in September 1972 while serving as Assistant Division Commander (Support) of the 101st Airborne Division under Maj. Gen. John Cushman. He had earned four Legion of Merit Medals, two Bronze Star Medals, two Air Medals, the Army Commendation Medal and had been decorated by the Republic of South Vietnam with its Armed Forces Honor Medal, 1st class. He was an Army aviator and senior parachutist. Although he retired to the life of a farmer near Pee Dee, Nemethy successfully transferred his military leadership talents to his civilian years, lending his abilities to numerous civic activities and organizations. Over the years, he served as chairman of the city-county Airport Board, the local Salvation Army, the American Heart Association and the Pennyroyal Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board. Additionally, Nemethy served as president of Church Hill Grange, the Retired Officers Association and the Hopkinsville Rotary Club. He was a member of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) and the 101st Airborne Division Association. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. Nemethy is survived by his wife, the former June Uffelman; two daughters, Tricia Eileen Nemethy, Tallahassee, Fla., and Terri Lynne Nemethy, Herndon; and four grandchildren.
