More detail on this person: Carleton Joseph Nysewander Army PilotCarleton Joseph Nysewander, 76, a retired Army helicopter pilot and civilian flight instructor, died March 6 of a heart attack while being transported from his Fairfax County home to Inova Fairfax Hospital. He had lived in Fairfax County since 1980. Mr. Nyeswander was born on Veterans Day in Pasadena, Calif., and joined the Army as a 16-year-old (he had to lie about his age) in 1946, serving with occupation forces in Japan. He took time out to graduate from high school in Encinitas, Calif., in 1948, before resuming his military career. He served in the Korean War and won the Combat Infantryman's Badge as a platoon sergeant. He also served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War and received the Distinguished Flying Cross as the co-pilot of a helicopter that attempted to rescue the crew of a companion aircraft that had been downed in enemy territory. He also received the Purple Heart. Because of his injuries, he no longer could fly, so he became an Army flight instructor. He retired as a chief warrant officer in 1968 but continued working for the Defense Department as a flight instructor. He retired a second time in 1992. His marriage to Carole Weigel Nysewander ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Anna W. Nysewander of Fairfax County; three children from his first marriage, Cynthia Gouci of Centreville, Teresa Thompson of Indian Shores, Fla., and Kathryn Hirst of Vancouver, B.C.; a daughter from his second marriage, Mary Zarlenga of Fairfax County; two brothers; and four grandchildren.
