More detail on this person: Helicopter crash in the United States at Fort Lewis, WA while acting as a pilot.Sam Newby and I were the hook pilots at the 539th in Phu Loi for about 7 months in 1968. Sam and I were classmates and shipped over on the same day. We were two pilots with two Chinooks and flew many hours together. Sam was Regular Army, did two tours in Vietnam, then he was killed in a crash on ROTC duty In Washington State. His wife, Klonda, and I have remained in contact over the years. She has stayed in touch with others in Flight Class, as well. I believe we arrived March 11, 68 and left ~1 year later. We flew with the 539th. Sam may have transfer to the Direct Support Maint Co (these were the guys that rigged the aircrafts for the Chinook lifts, PIPESMOKE) in Phu Loi after I went to Vung Tau in Sept 68. Do not know his second tour information.
