More detail on this person: Mr Donald Nider Newman, 61 OBITUARIES Anchorage Daily News (AK) - Thursday, December 9, 1993 Anchorage resident Donald Nider Newman, 61, died Dec. 6 at Providence Hospital. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with full military honors. A gathering of friends and family will immediately follow the service at VFW Post No. 10252, 3105 Mountain View Drive. Mr. Newman was born March 15, 1932, in Detroit. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Detroit in 1950, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor of general studies degree. From 1954 to 1962, Mr. Newman worked on the Detroit Police Department, then joined the U.S. Army. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and came to Alaska in August 1975. He received many medals and ribbons, including two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Presidential Unit Citation. He retired in 1981. From 1987 until his death, Mr. Newman worked as a dispatcher for the Anchorage Daily News. He was a member of VFW Post No. 10252, American Legion Post No. 29, and the Grosse Pointe Mason Lodge No. 584 in Detroit. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and computer buff, his family said. They said, "Mr. Newman enjoyed spending time with the children and grandchildren in his extended family." Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Pat of Anchorage; son and daughter-in- law, Mark and Margie of Eagle River; daughter, Dawn of San Jose, Calif.; brother, Allen of Garden City, Mich.; and his granddaughters, Sarah and Katie of Eagle River. He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his son and daughter, Dorothy. Memorial donations may be sent to the Coronary Care Unit, Providence Hospital, 3200 Providence Drive, Anchorage 99508.
