Owings, of Lake Wales, Florida passed away
Monday, January, 9, 2017 at his residence, Spring
Lake Farm.
He was born November 17, 1932 in Columbus,
Georgia to the late William Owings and Thelma A
(Carter) Owings. Always a Floridian, he graduated
High School in Tampa, and then the University of
Florida in 1954.
Colonel Owings has been a resident of Lake Wales
since 1974. After retiring from a long active
Military Career, that assigned him to multiple
duty stations around the world. Including tours as
a helicopter pilot in Korea, Viet Nam and Germany
(as NATO ADVISOR).
Feet first in Florida, he continued his service,
with his second career. Serving Florida for 28
years in the District 1, Right of Way, Florida
Department of Transportation. There he
affectionally was known as "SOB" Sweet Ole
Bill.
He is preceded in death by his son Michael Gardner
and daughter Mary Dawn Owings.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Niven
Gardner Owings, sons Jeffrey G. Owings of Winter
Haven, FL, Michael Owings and wife Sahara of
Virginia Beach, VA, daughters Wendy Pinto and
husband Al of Naperville, IL, Kristal Homoki and
husband Kurt of Brooklyn, MI, brother George B.
Owings and wife Rhett of Turlock, CA, 12
grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and
faithful companion, Wookie.
Visitation will be held 1:00 PM Friday, January
20, 2017 until service time at 2:00PM at the First
Presbyterian Church in Lake Wales with Rev. Chad
Reynolds officiating.
