More detail on this person: Retired LTC John (Jack) V. Ohnstad passed away on April 20, 2006 of pulmonary hypertension while residing at his retirement home in Estelline, S. D. He was a former member of the 145th & leaves his wife Phyllis, four children John Jr., Pam Bodart, Melanie Henkelman, Daniel & 19 grand children to mourn his passing. Jack graduated from OCS in March of 1953 and from Flight School in March 1956. He was an Army Engineer Officer and Aviator and served with distinction in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He was a pilot with the 114th Assault Helicopter Company in 1963 and 1964 and a former CO of the 68th Assault Helicopter, the "Top Tigers" while stationed at Bien Hoa from November 1967 through March 1968. During his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medals, the Purple Heart and many other awards and commendations.

Jack retired 31 May 1971 after 20 years of service and in retirement he farmed, owned and operated a supper club for 10 years, and was head maintenance supervisor at the Estelline Care Center for about 10 years. Jack was a graduate of the University of Nebraska Omaha. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
