More detail on this person: James H. Paulin Jr. Houston Chronicle (TX) - Thursday, December 7, 2006 TX United States JAMES H. PAULIN JR. "BUZ", age 63, entered into eternal rest December 1st, 2006 at his home in Houston, TX. He joined the United States Army and was a member of the 709th Maintenance Battalion, 9th Infantry Division and the 334th Assault Helicopter Company. A highly decorated helicopter and fixed wing aircraft pilot, Warrant Officer Paulin, call sign Raider 21, proudly volunteered to serve our country during the Vietnam War. Buz, a dedicated veteran continued his service flying for A.L.E.R.T. of Texas participating in numerous rescue, and relief operations for victims of tropical storm Allison, and hurricane Katrina. Buz also volunteered with the Collings Foundation to preserve and restore the historical aircraft that have served our armed forces all over the world. He was extremely well respected among the flying community. Buz was known for his undeniable loyalty to loved ones, adoring character, and exceptional personality. He held multiple aircraft and instrument ratings, and above all else held the highest regard for attention to safety. Born in Baton Rouge, LA to James Hudson Paulin Sr. and Martha McAllister Paulin, Buz moved with his family to Pacific Palisades, CA. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and also spent time living briefly in the Philippines. Buz attended Santa Monica City College prior to volunteering for flight training in the U.S. Army. During advanced flight training at Fort Riley Kansas he met his future wife Mary Driski Paulin. Upon returning from overseas, Buz completed his U.S. Army career and obtained his commercial pilot's license. He relocated to Austin, TX and enrolled at St. Edward's University. Soon Buz transferred to The University of Texas and graduated receiving a Bachelor's degree from the School of Business. After exchanging wedding vows in 1972, Mary and Buz settled in Houston, TX where he began a new business career with Summit Insurance. They soon started their new family having two children and Buz later joined Federated Development Company as corporate secretary and treasurer. Buz was currently employed as V.P. of Development at the Sam Houston Race Park and had been a staff member since the race track's opening. Mr. Paulin is survived by his loving wife Mary, two children Mr. Ryan Paulin and Dr. Heather Paulin, and his sister Elizabeth "Smoky" Paulin Dagan and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service and reception will be held at 10:00am, Friday, December 8, 2006 at the Grace Presbyterian Church Chapel located at 10221 Ella Lee, Houston, TX 77042. Memorial contributions celebrating Buz can be made to The Collings Foundation designated to CF West, P.O. Box 248, Stow, MA 01775.
