More detail on this person: I was a crew chief
at the same time Chad was a helicopter pilot in
the Army. Chad suffered badly from Diabetes and
had dialysis 3 times a week for a couple years.
He had a leg amputated early this week and it was
downhill from there. I will be attending and

VHPA member Chadwick C. Payne was born
February 14, 1937 in Duncan, OK to Chad C.
Payne Sr. and Lois Reed Payne. He died February
9, 2008 after suffering from Diabetes for several
years having dialysis three times a week for the
last couple of years. He graduated from Lawton
High School in 1955 and from Cameron University in
1957. He then attended the University of Oklahoma
and graduated from Oklahoma State University in
1960.
He married Pat Tompkins on December 31, 1957, in
Burkburnett, Texas.
He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army in
Vietnam, flying helicopter gunships. He was
awarded the Silver Star, three Distinguished
Flying Crosses, Air Medal with 49 clusters, the
Purple Heart, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of
Gallantry.
Mr. Payne was director of the Delta Elderly
Nutrition Program serving Stephens and McClain
counties for 31 years. He was a very talented
Western artist and enjoyed painting, classical
music and gun collecting.
Survivors include his wife, Pat, two sons, six
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He is buried at the Fort Sill Post Cemetery, Fort
Sill, OK.
