More detail on this person: Col. Nicholas George "Nick" Psaki Jr. Col. Nicholas George "Nick" Psaki Jr., 89, Hollidaysburg, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., son of the late Nicholas George Sr. and Gina (Kapitanakis) Psaki. He was twice married: first to Patricia Pearson, who died in November 1984. He married Cindy L. Hammers June 6, 1981, in State College, Pa. Surviving are his wife, Cindy; a son, Nicholas George Psaki III and his wife, Sherry, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Diane M. Zaba and her husband, Joel, of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Denise M. Walker and her husband, Jim, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, F. Regina Psaki and her husband, Marc Vanscheeuwijck, of Lowell, Ore.; a daughter, Alexandra E. Psaki of Hollidaysburg; three grandchildren: Nicholas George Psaki IV, Katherine A. Psaki and Gary P. Graham; and six great-grandchildren. Nick was preceded in death by a brother, John N. Parker. Col. Psaki was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hollidaysburg. Nick was a career United States Army veteran, serving during WWII and the Korean and Vietnam wars, during which time he attained the rank of colonel. He retired as a fixed wing and rotary aircraft pilot with more than 5,000 hours of flight time. He received the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 21 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), Army Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Senior Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantry Badge Second Award, Master Army Aviator Wings, Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Second Award, French Fourragere, Belgium Fourragere, Netherlands Orange Lanyard, Dutch Cit Lion and seven Overseas Service Bars. Col. Psaki attended Kings College, New York; the University of Alabama; received a bachelor's degree in history from Southern Cal; and received schooling at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Levenworth, Kan.; Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va.; and U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. He was a member of the Eldorado Kiwanis, Quiet Birdmen, Order of Daedelians, Quad A. (Army Aviation Association of America), Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hollidaysburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Jeanne Jacobson officiating. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery with full military honors. Nick was a man of great passion and love. He dearly loved his country and was honored to serve it. His love of flying was legendary but his greatest love was his family.
