More detail on this person: Jim Gary Phillips, 79, of Newark, died Sunday, March 7, 2021 at his home. He was born April 27, 1941 in Hawthorne, California to the late Audley and Lillian (Johnson) Phillips. Jim was a proud U.S. Army Veteran serving during Vietnam. He was a member of a Veteran's organization: 48th Assault Helicopter Company. During his service in the U.S. Army, he achieved rank of Captain, in the Special Forces Unit. He was chosen to be on the first Honor Flight for Vietnam veterans Purple Heart recipients, which was one of the highlights of his life. During his years in the US Army, he received multiple medals, badges, commendations, and citations including: Silver Star, Bronze Star (2), Air Medal, Purple Heart (2), Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge, Danish Parachute Badge, and Army Aviator Badge. He retired from Owens Corning as an electrician after more than 30 years of service. He loved attending theatre productions at the local playhouse and was a big supporter of the Weathervane Playhouse. He enjoyed international travel, his favorite being his trip to Ireland. He never met a stranger and adored spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by three children, Kelley Phillips (Newark, Oh), Lea Chilkuri (LaGrange, Ga), and Gary Phillips (Northborogh, Ma); grandchildren, Caley (Andrew) Shorts, Christian (Leah Ogilbee) Ward, and Chelsea (Eric) Lively; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: and two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the Weathervane Playhouse and/or Honor Flight - Columbus. No funeral services will be held at this time. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
