A SAD NOTE, one of our bed & breakfast colleagues Larry Pithan of "Away at Sea Bed and Breakfast" passed away October 21 after being ill for several months. He was a calm, strong leader with a good sense of judgment. Larry was instrumental in forming and being the first president of the Bed and Breakfast Inns of Galveston an association of six bed and breakfasts. Unfortunately, I learned why he was a leader, after he was gone. He had a Masters degree in Social Work and came to Galveston from Iowa to direct the Social Services Department at St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston, for three years. He was in the Army and completed a tour in Viet Nam in 1971 where he was a Huey helicopter pilot. Captain Pithan was decorated with both the Bronze Star Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. We will all miss him--- good by Larry.
